Intra-seasonal rainfall variability in the Amazon basin related to large-scale circulation patterns: a focus on western Amazon–Andes transition region

  • - Nine circulation patterns, referred to as CPs, were identified to characterize intra-seasonal precipitation variability in the Amazon basin.
  • - We employed an unsupervised machine learning technique known as Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to cluster daily low-level wind data from ERA-Interim reanalysis.
  • - We found a consistent correspondence of rainfall patterns to the identified CPs across various precipitation datasets, including TRMM-3B42, 2A25-PR, HOP, and CHIRPS.
  • - Our focus on the western Amazon region highlights CP4 and CP5 as significant drivers of wet and dry spells, respectively.
